That's 'Vegas 'Fucking' Idol' to you, Dawg
You know how they say "everybody's a critic"? Here's why. Everybody's got "talent." From those god-awful "American Idol" rejects to the so-called cream of the crop in this weekend's Vegas-headliner competition, "The Entertainer," it seems as if every Paul, Sarah and Delisco not only wants to be a star, but feels goshdarnit entitled to his/her time in the spotlight.
E! jumps on the "reality" competition bandwagon with this elimination exercise in showroom wannabe-dom. It's overseen by Wayne Newton - he of the jet-black hair-helmet, 40-plus-year career and one actual hit, that 1960s easy-listening oddity "Danke Schoen." OK, two, if you count the "relevant" ballad "Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast" from 1972.
Newton is actually the least of the problems with this me-too effort, although the show lays it on heavy with the omigod-he's-an-icon babbling by its 10 contestants. "Mr. Las Vegas himself" is presented as mentor, judge and anointer, the man who will shape these raw performers into lean, mean Vegas machines. The instinct is actually a good one. Who the heck guides "entertainers" into being anymore? The singing-dancing-jesting headliner-host of Rat Pack renown has been superceded by the fast-hit wonder and personality-free flameout. Imagine Frank Sinatra coming up today and establishing a 50-year career. Um, don't think so.
