Riding The Crest Of A High And Beautiful Wave

Has it been five years? Six? Seems like a lifetime since a drunken conversation at the Carson Street Cafe hatched an idea to build a website about Las Vegas - by tourists, for tourists. The plan - as sketched out with a crayon on the back of a keno card - was to tell it how it is and have a helluva lot of fun doing it.

Armed with $15 and the spiritual guidance of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, we registered the domain VegasTripping.com - a name channeled through the drunken sudoku-meets-crossword-puzzle-doodles of Miss Monkay. In a fleeting instance of magic, it all became clear... VegasTripping : a mashed up combination of 'Vegas' + 'The Strip' + 'Stripping' + 'Vegas Trip' + 'Tripping'.

We truly were somewhere beyond Barstow, at the edge of a different desert, when the drugs you are looking at began to take hold.

Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Has it been five years? Six? It seems like a lifetime-the kind of peak that never comes again.

San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. But no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant...

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning...

And that, I think, was the handle-that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum, we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave...

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

From all of us, to each and every one of you, thank you for paddling out and joining us. Riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.

Happy Birthday.

happy birthday vt! you get better with every year.

Five years is quite a milestone. Vegas Tripping is full of such unique, wonderful content. You should be extremely proud of what you have built.

The VegasTripping birthday...is it May 5th or 6th? It shares a b-day with me if it's on May 5th. Cinco de Mayo. I was born a drunk.

May there be at least another five more.....

Congrats on the 5 years. May you live longer than most of my liver!!!
