First Offer: $1,000,000, Final Offer: $8k
I used to have a thing for those stupid Top Dollar slot machines. The premise is simple, if you hit the 'Top Dollar' progressive, the machine goes in to bonus play and makes four "offers" in differing denominations which the player chooses to take or pass. It's kinda like a "Deal or No Deal" situation... you never know what the next offer is or if you are getting gyp'd.
The Mississippi State Supreme Court this week ruled that Florida Eash, a gambler from Biloxi, was entitled to a paltry $8,000 after the $5 Double Top Dollar machine at the Imperial Palace Biloxi "malfunctioned" when it told her she had won $1,000,000.
State gaming commissioners' initial ruling that Ms. Eash should be paid the cool million "to ensure that reasonable fairness and the perception of fairness prevails" was struck down by the courts. Despite getting Triple Double Diamond on the pay line, "contract law" ie. the rules on the paytable, take precedent over whatever is displayed in the payout window.
Jerks!
