The Poker Face as Art
Dr. Dave Schwartz posted earlier today about an painter in Jimi Plays Berkeley, CA who has a fascination with the faces of folks who play casino games. Being that the collective "we" are those folks, the paintings in question - by artist Lisa Esherick - are definitely worth peering through the looking glass at.
From a profile in the Oakland Tribune:
While showing a guest from Germany a slice of American life, she took him inside a Reno casino, a place that was more foreign to Esherick than it was to the tourist.
"I was just amazed," she recalled from that mid-1990s experience. "I was struck by the light, the way it exaggerated the features on faces, and the sharpness of color, which is vibrant in the American casinos."
If I remembered the first time I took acid, I'd probably have said the same thing, replacing "American casinos" with "the back of a VW van at Laguna Seca before Phish melted my brain."
Anyways... here's the set of casino paintings from Ms. Esherick's website for your perusal. Might make a great addition to the Vegas lovers den.
