Aloha New Rooms At The Cal
The California Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas has unveiled an array of very spiffy new room designs as well as a brand new website.
Without resorting to such obvious Hawaiian icons - tiki's, surfboards, volcanic rock, palm frond print wallpaper - The Cal's rooms capture the tropical levity and easy going 'spirit of aloha.' The Cal is, after all, Hawaii Las Vegas.

Deluxe King
Sharp, soft and comforting decor which adds modern touches minus over the top kookyness that seems to be in vogue on The Strip. I really like the shutters on the windows... different.

Deluxe Dual Queen
For the rates... ($32-72 mid week, $45-112 weekends) these rooms are a superb value. Plus there's spam musubi at arms reach.

The bathroom is devoid of fancy whizmos - flat panel tvs near the tub, bathrobes etc. - but who cares. Here's an alternate view.
The Cal's Deluxe Suites are brand new and equally as sharp.
I'm impressed enough to put the Cal on the short list for a future visit.

Comments & Discussion:
I got a free Deluxe King once, on a low floor over the casino ceiling. It looked exactly like this but with a very white paint job. It wasn't too bad, but was kind of old. The shower and mattress looked beat up, and I decided not to use it, since I could easily get from home to downtown the next morning for a slot tourney.
The rates are nice, the hotel is inoffensive (think Imperial Palace level but downtown and without the gaudy stuff), and the Cal/MSS combo are certainly worth visiting if you're downtown. Anyone planning on using the bus system to get around has the DTC transfer central right there, along with some of Las Vegas' lowest incomes so if you're riding the Deuce use the Neonopolis stop at night.
It's definitely now on my short list for my next trip as well. Doing a quick check for the dates of my next trip, rates at the Cal are higher than the Fremont and MSS.
