Mandalay Bay Exchanges A Dancing Queen For Lion King

The venerable Mamma Mia! (The Smash Hit Musical Based On The Songs of Black Sabbath ABBA) will close on January 4th 2009. Tickets for the last leg of it's whopping 2,100 performance run at Mandalay Bay are on sale now.

The Walt Disney/Elton John collaboration The Lion King has been tapped as replacement, probably to the chagrin of Cirque du Soleil's head fromage. To say that the odds have long been tilted in Cirque du Soleil's favor would be an understatement, as MGM Mirage (aka Lion, Inc) has installed their Franco-Canadien extravaganzas at nearly every property including the new BeLIEve (Criss Angel) thang at Luxor and the Elvis show coming to Aria at CityCenter.

Perhaps Lion Inc have finally seen the Cirque show saturation point that we tourists have been hollaring about for years. Maybe the Criss Angel situation proved to be the end of the line. More likely scenario : Lion Inc decided to keep their Broadway to Vegas odds on the table, a success which nearly every casino in town has tried to duplicate with varying degrees of non-success.

No doubt that someone at Lion Inc crunched the numbers about gift shop possibilities including the name - The Bare Necessities? Big hakuna matatas for parleying Lion Inc's corporate mascot with The Lion King, and grabbing a piece of the Elton John Vegas Tourist Package pie as well.

On another note... is this the first time a Disney related production has been mounted in Las Vegas? I'll bet noted Disney-o-phile Steve Wynn is at least slightly steamed.

Comments & Discussion:

I'll take "Shows You'll Never Catch Me Seeing" for $500 Alex.

I guess now that Disney has "Disneyfied" Times Square, The Strip is next.

One of the resorts needs to think outside of the box and commission a Las Vegas production of The Rocky Horror Show.

Is it gonna be topless?
