Putting Lipstick On A Volcano, It's A New Mirage Volcano!

New Mirage Volcano

As you've probably seen or read about, the world's most famous eyebrow-singe'r - the Mirage Volcano - has been getting a little work done. To help build up the excitement, Mirage has released a few teasers.

When sparked, the Mirage Volcano will transform the entire lagoon in front of Mirage into a flaming version of the fountains At Bellagio. There will be more fire, more explosions, more dancing jets of heat, and a whooping soundtrack.

Choreographed FireShooters - which send massive fireballs more than 12 feet into the air - were designed specifically for The Mirage using the latest developments in flame-expression technology. The FireShooters will punctuate the performances with eruptions of fiery "lava" that will flow down the mountain's fissures in a series of lively flames. As the eruption ignites the surrounding lagoon, the FireShooters will bring Las Vegas' signature blast within feet of spectators.

Perhaps this is The Mirage's way of stealing a little bit of the thunder back from Wynn Macau, which features a water and fire show on the lagoon out front.

Whereas the Wynn Macau water/fire show features a drum n bass version of "I'm Holding Out For A Hero" as well as Bellagio-ish classical music soundtrack, the Mirage Volcano ups the excitement with a brand new soundtrack penned by a former member of the Grateful Dead.

Huh? Wha? Grateful Dead? Yep. The new thunderous soundtrack for the Mirage Volcano was composed and performed by half of the Dead's batterie - Mickey Hart (fyi, they had two drummers.) For those old enough to have experienced the "Drumz/Space" portion of a Dead show, you know pretty much what to expect... an elastic yet pounding tribal drum bonanza. Hart's collaborator on the project is tabla master Zakir Hussein, whose impressive resume includes tearing up the skins as a member of 70's world-prog band Shakti, sarod master Ali Akbar Khan, sitar legend Ravi Shankar and the man whose very idea spawned Mirage's Cirque show LOVE, the one and only George Harrison.

Mickey Hart's inclusion here will obviously get the headlines, but any Dead Head will tell you that Mickey's a bit of a hack, and "quit" (read:fired) the band as a result of his being a lousy drum set player mismanagement of the band by Hart's dad in 1971. All was forgiven in a few short years and Mickey rejoined the Dead for good until the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995 pretty much stuck a fork in them.

In a sign of "more things to come" - MGM Mirage has continued their engagement of "new media" marketing strategy, with a new volcano logo (above), a dedicated Mirage Volcano YouTube channel, a Volcano blog (Latest post: "*coughcoughcough* i've got gas! *ugh*" no, it's not really the latest post, but it should be) and a Mirage Volcano page on Facebook. Unfortunately, you can't "throw a sheep at" the Volcano... but you can still be it's friend.

Here's some raw video of Mirage Volcano construction behind the scenes:

Comments & Discussion:

For those of you that complain about about kids being in the casinos, here's the perfect way to get rid of them..........OK that was a little F'd up and demented but seriously, I wonder how long it's going to be before some drunk falls into the fire.....

F'ed up and demented? Not in the least. I'd like to see children in Las Vegas used as chum in the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef.

We've got a mid-December post-rodeo, pre-Xmas trip planned, I'll try and see if I can be that drunk that falls into the flaming lagoon.

Yeah we're going in April and possibly staying at the Mirage. I've got about 3 hotels I'm throwing around in my head right now.......oh man I don't know how that stroller got in there...damn....someone lost their Dora the Explorer doll too....

mmm...barbequed children....

Sounds like a new menu item at the buffet....
