How To Upgrade To A Better Hotel Room (Answer : Complain)

The New York Times has a piece in the Travel section all about the various techniques hotel snobs use to get upgraded to higher value hotel rooms. About 10 paragraphs in, they mention the obvious : tipping the person at the reception desk.

Calling reception to request a new room - either because the ceiling is too low, or there are scuff marks on the wall or a cigarette burn in the carpet - is another tried and true technique.

It's the following one, advocated by and used successfully by an octogenarian retiree, really perked up my ears. Upon arriving at reception, the gentleman would say point blank to the clerk:

Now, listen, donít give me the room you were going to give me. Give me the room you were going to give me after the one I came downstairs and complained about.

The direct approach, minus the $20 trick. According to the guy's daughter, it "almost always worked." I'm definitely going to try that one in the future.

Comments & Discussion:

I'm wondering how well that would work for someone young. Old people tend to get a pretty good pass for those kinds of things.

Interesting. Agreed that it probably works better for older (and hopefully cantankerous-looking) men. Someone younger should give it a try and report. Preferably someone who looks like they could be a real pain in the ass if they have a mind to.
