An early morning shootout at the Hustler Casino in Gardena sent hundreds of pre-Christmas gamblers ducking under their tables Friday, as a carjacking suspect fleeing police burst through the card room's front doors and took two hostages at gunpoint before being fatally shot in the head by police, officials said.

No patrons were hit by gunfire, but the suspect died later at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance, said officer Eloy Navaro of the Los Angeles Police Department command post.

The incident began at 3:50 a.m. when officers from the LAPD's Harbor Division recognized a 2000 Jaguar that had been reported stolen Thursday in an armed robbery in Harbor City, Sgt. Brent Smith said.

A 25-minute car chase ensued, starting in San Pedro and winding through the Palos Verdes Peninsula before the suspect jumped out of the still-moving car in front of the Gardena casino owned by Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, Smith said.

"It was chaotic," Smith said. "Thank God the officers were there -- there were probably over 100 people in the casino. It could have been a lot worse."
