Note To Self : Don't Drink The Water At The Tropicana
The comedy of errors that is the Tropicana Las Vegas took a turn towards the dramatic - and potentially explosive - with the discovery of E.coli bacteria in the well water which provides a portion of the water to the Tropicana Island Tower.
For some perspective, this is what the Centers for Disease Control says about E.coli in their FAQ:
Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses. Still other kinds of E. coli are used as markers for water contamination-so you might hear about E. coli being found in drinking water, which are not themselves harmful, but indicate the water is contaminated. It does get a bit confusing-even to microbiologists.
Shortly after the discovery by the Las Vegas Valley Water District (who test the wells every few weeks - God Bless Them) all guests from the Island tower were relocated to the Paradise tower, or bounced across town to the Westin Casaurina, which is owned by the same company.
The LVWWD has tested the water numerous times since the initial detection - all of which have come back negative for E.coli. Could it have been a false positive? Could it have been a municipal hit job put together by the Culinary Union? Could it have been caused by bed bugs? Could it have been a poisoning of the well by well doing ne'er do wells? Could it be that Jesus is just plain sick of looking at the Tropicana all day?
It should be noted that it is the well water that is contaminated, NOT THE TROPICANA itself. If Hooters, Excalibur or any surrounding properties pulled from the same well, they would also be in the hot seat. Apparently, the Trop is the only hotel on the strip that gets a portion of its water supply from underground wells.
