Lorenzo Fertitta, half of the team that has built Stations Casinos from local operator to high-class casino resort visionary, has resigned his position to become CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Lorenzo along with his brother Frank (III) took over Stations from their father, who grew the company from one operation (Palace Station) to outcroppings all over the Las Vegas Valley. Their most ambitious project Viva - located on nearly 100 acres of land surrounding the current Wild Wild West casino - was announced barely a month ago.

Lorenzo Fertitta's involvement with the UFC began in 2001 when he, along with brother Frank and Dana White purchased the fledgling company for a measly $2 million dollars and turned into a box office and pay-per-view cash cow.

There's a ton more backstory from tonight's announcement at Palace Station on the Yahoo! MMA Blog
