Chef Gordon Ramsay : No Hells Kitchen In Sin City

Multiple award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay has opened a new restaurant at the London West Hollywood hotel (formerly the Wyndham Bel Age) located on the Sunset Strip, just steps from Larry Flynt's Hustler store and the famed Whiskey A-Go-Go rock club.

When asked why Hells Kitchen's screamin' demon elected to open in WeHo and not Las Vegas, the Chef replied:

Vegas? I don't want to play my card in Las Vegas. It's materialistic.

Certainly a clever response, however I'm compelled to wonder exactly what Chef Ramsay means by 'materialistic'. Greedy? A town that runs on money? He doesn't want to sell souvenir Gordon Ramsay yards of beer?

Sorry to pull the rug out from under you Chef Ramsay, but Los Angeles is the pinnacle of materialistic behavior... Las Vegas is where most Southern Californians go to unload some of the excess materials.

Let's just hope that this comment is just Ramsay touting his new restaurant in a somewhat dicey location (I've been in the former Wyndham and it's not so snazzy - to be fair, they've completely redone the place since the name change). With Las Vegas becoming a virtual murderers row of heavy weight celebrity chefs, his not joining the fray eventually could be construed as ducking the competition. Or he could be waiting for Steve Wynn to call.

Comments & Discussion:

another good sound bite from chef ramsay. he seems to favor certain hotel owners in his endeavors. i wonder if it's more to do with favorable rent than anything else. west hollywood (especially that particular location) is an odd choice. or he's still perfecting his shrimp cocktail before hitting vegas.

Why do you say he favors certain hotels, Cherrioh?

he's got a couple at conrad and hilton hotels (conrad being a hilton brand), a few at savoy group properties (berkeley, calridge'sm connaught) and i can't remember, i think a few more that were grouped together. of course the london in both new york and west hollywood. most of the hotel situated properties of his seem to accompany refurbishment of old/established luxury properties. it's probably savvy business sense as much as anything else?
