Sky Blue Sky

Sky Art - Karen Kristin

It's another beautiful day. Deep blue sky, with only a handful of cotton puff clouds floating ever so gently up in the stratosphere. If only every day could be like this day.

Oh wait. Every day is like this, exactly like this. The photo above isn't of the actual sky, but in fact the painted sky ceiling above the Grand Canal Shops at the Venetian Macao.

We've all been perplexed at one time or another by the faux sky-ceilings in many of our favorite resort promenades, balancing the detailed realism of the color changing skies with the incongruity of being indoors.

We can all thank Sky Art - Karen Kristin and her team of painters for baffling us for the last seventeen years. Sky Art's work has been commissioned by Caesars Forum Shops (and some casino areas), The Grand Canal Shops at Venetian Las Vegas and Macau, Boulder Station, Beau Rivage, Sunset Station, Monte Carlo's coffee shop, Barbary Coast and Luxor's casino (which was recently painted over).

So how do they decide where to put the clouds? After a base coat of horizon has been applied to the surface, a painter armed with high powered air brush applies clouds to the ceiling where lead artist Karen Kristin aims a red laser pointer from the ground below based on small mural sized mockups prepared previously.

Follow the link below to see more of their work as well as behind the scenes photos of various sky settings being applied at your favorite casinos.

Thanks to Canadiancrapsshooter for sending in the link. Fascinating stuff.
