Time Warp : Vintage MGM Grand and Luxor Websites
While doing some research for a future article, I stumbled across the very first website for the MGM Grand published to that World Wide Web thing-a-ma-jig in December 1996.
A screen shot is below, or you can visit the pickled version using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine

Wow. Speckled outerspace background, ultra compressed photo, image maps, 480 pixel dimensions, noisy transparent gifs. If you click around some of the links in the bottom navigation, you end up in all sorts of strange versions of the MGMGrand.com website. Insanity.

The 1998 version of Luxor.com has a rotating pyramid animated gif on it's "splash page" (remember those?). I like that animated gif so much, I copied it to our server for safe keeping. Clicking around that site led to an announcement about the tower expansion.
We've sure come a long way on this group project called the internet, haven't we?

Comments & Discussion:
What's interesting is that the old MGM Grand site actually took pride in it's Hollywood heritage. Nowadays, the casino seems like it doesn't want anything to do with some silly "movie" theme, despite being named M-G-M! Kinda confusing. Looks like Luxor wasn't the first casino to fall victim to the de-theming curse.
