The End of An Era : Jackie Gaughan Sells El Cortez

Jackie Gaughan Sells El Cortez

It's the end of an era. Jackie Gaughan has sold the last piece of his casino empire - El Cortez.

Jackie has been a fixture in Vegas for fifty or so years, with the main concentration being downtown Las Vegas. In addition to El Cortez, Jackie owned Las Vegas Club, Jackie Gaughan's Union Plaza (both sold in 2004), Gold Spike, Western and the Golden Nugget.

Perhaps as his last major project, the 87 year old Gaughan headed up a major renovation of the El Cortez, transforming it from being the butt end of nearly every Vegas cheapskate joke to one of the nicer and possibly most unpretentious casinos in downtown Las Vegas.

Not but a month or so ago, Donnymac, Spyder and I all noticed - to some degree of shock - how clean, bright and friendly El Cortez has become as a result of the transformation. It was unanimous that the El Cortez was high on the list for a return engagement.

Perhaps Jackie - who lives, plays and personally greets guests at El Cortez daily - wished to return the joint to how it was when he found it. More likely, Jackie cares about El Cortez and its customers, long after he's gone.

Thank you Jackie!

(Throw glasses into the fireplace and take to the streets)

They better leave it open. Or Donny, Chuck, and I will have no where to meet..... and they better not clean it up anymore, I'd miss that "dank"!!!
