Jackpot : 1960 Showboat Chip Sells for 29k On eBay

By accident or design, you've probably pocketed a few casino chips during your casino gambling travails. Some of these might end up in a shoebox, or in a neatly matted frame built specifically for chip collection. Some of them get lost, and some of them make their way to eBay after extended periods in junk drawers or change dishes.

One of these - a $1 chip from the Showboat Vegas acquired during a trip to Las Vegas in 1960 - was put up on eBay by retiree Sandy Marbs from Florissant, Missouri at the starting price of $2.25.

What Ms. Marbs didn't know is that her chip is one of only three $1 Showboat chips from that edition known to exist. Dealers and chip aficionados began tempting her with direct offers for the chip to circumvent the auction process.

When all was said and done - the $1 Showboat chip that sat idle in her jewelry box for 48 years fetched the largest sum ever paid for a vintage chip - $28,988.88.

I recently saw some chips I've collected (including a rare original Moulin Rouge $25 chip w/hole drilled after the chips were confiscated by the Feds) going for upwards of 3x what I paid for it five or so years ago - a pretty healthy return on investment. I'm doubt that the blue $.50 Westward Ho chip that stowed itself away in my travel bag will appreciate similarly, but I guess I won't know until 2056 to find out.

What's your chip collection score?
