Coming To Vegas : Hair Metal, Prog Rock, Van Halen, The Osmonds And More...

While doing a little digging and poking around the internets looking for some fabulous new shows to add to our show guide, I found a bunch of entries that I thought might particularly interesting to note.

Probably the first and foremost, is Tiger Jam, a charity event put on by last weekends Masters runner up Tiger Woods. The recently reformed Van Halen will be performing - their first concert since Eddie Van Halen underwent a battery of medical tests for an undisclosed illness. As of now, Van Halen's appearance is still a go. If you're going to be in Vegas this weekend, you might want to hook up some tix.

Also this week, trippers will have to chose between two classic hair metal acts from the 80's on April 17th. The choice is tough, maybe. Either take a chance on RATT at the HOB, or White Lion at Four Queens. White Lion tix are only $16, which is four dollars more than I paid to see Quiet Riot 24 years ago.

Speaking of cheap, Everclear's show at the HOB on the holiest of holidays - 4/20, is listed for $9 on Ticketmaster. That's cheaper than one hand of blackjack at the Flaming-O. Yikes. Could be a typo.

Prog rock legends Rush are booked at Mandalay Event Center on May 10th, a week after the original four guys from Asia come to HOB on May 3. Our friend and VegasGang compadre Dr. Dave Schwartz is a huge Rush fan, so be on the look out for someone in a UNLV pull over taking copious notes about the set list on his smart phone.

Another interesting show coming to town in June is Dethklok, the band from the Adult Swim animated show Metalocalypse. Evidently, they've hired a crack band of metal legends (including former Death/Dark Angel drummer Big Gene Hoglan) to play LIVE as the animated version of Dethklok rocks out on the projection screen.

Random Notes: Ronn Lucas, who moved to LuXor after a long run at Harrah's in August, has moved over to Excalibur. Blind Melon is back with a new singer that sounds remarkably like the deceased Shannon Hoon. They're performing at Jillians April 30th. Donny & Marie Osmond's are doing a week long run at MGM Grand July 17-23, not the Flamingo as some folks have reported. Journey will return to Vegas on July 18th after breaking in a new singer whom the plucked from a Journey coverband in the Philippines via YouTube. How about that for a back story. They'll be performing poolside at Mandalay Bay on July 18th. Cher's run at Caesars Palace starts on May 5th. Relatedly, two UFC fights are scheduled for this summer, UFC 84: I Will (B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk, Tito Ortiz vs. Lyota Machida and more) on May 24th at MGM Grand Garden Arena, and UFC 86 (Quentin 'Rampage' Jackson vs Forrest Griffin with an undercard TBA on July 5th at Mandalay Bay Event Center.

Mrs. Mo is bugging me now about going to see Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange. She's worried that he's gonna o.d. in the wake of last weeks blowup that culminated in Artie quitting the show. If you haven't heard Artie on Stern, you truly missed out. Artie was the best.

Hope that shouting out some of these shows helps you figure out some of your possible Vegas trip plans for the summer and beyond.

Comments & Discussion:

I caught the Artie meltdown and listened to it several times (The advantages of having a receiver with the replay function). I doubt he'll be doing any shows in Vegas in the near future. Even before Thursday's incident, he had mentioned that his schedule for the summer was actually pretty thin because of the USO trip in June. Now if his meltdown (and possible departure from the Stern Show) leads to the USO gig being 86'd, who knows if he may do Vegas. Jeff Beacher could always book him (And maybe even Bababooey) in for an appearance at Beacher's Madhouse sometime in the Summer.

Some folks are claiming the incident was a bit for the show, designed to give Artie some sort of cover to go get his shit together. The fact that Artie and Teddy both still made the trip to Amsterdam (As confirmed by Shuli during The Jay Thomas Show Friday morning.) does in someways make you think that it could be a bit. What makes me think it wasn't a bit/shoot/work/etc. is the fact that Howard kiboshed the Howard 100 replay of the show and the show rundown for Thursday still has yet to be posted on howardstern.com.

Here's to hoping that this incident is the spark needed to finally get Artie to get himself straightened out. If it is, hopefully it won't be like Rev. Bob Levy when he quit the drinking and the road coke......

Artie's actions are practically textbook for drug behavior. If it was a cover, it was a pretty bad one.

Self destructive, angry assholes are what many druggies turn into. Also, they become unpredictable. Like, you know, attacking people.

I hope I get a chance to see him live before he Chateau Marmonts himself.

PS - Vespa - totally jealous of your replay Sirius.
