Cage Match: Bill Harrah vs. Julius Caesar. Caesar Wins. Sayonara Harrahs

Get out the trumpets, it's time to play taps honoring the death of Harrah's Entertainment as a corporate entity. As if going private wasn't enough, the propellerheads (thx CBinkley) at Harrah's Entertainment have given founder Bill Harrah the boot and renamed itself...

(wait)
(cue drum roll)
(cue Emperor fanfare)
(cue Roman guard processional)
(cue screaming wenches):

Caesars Entertainment Corporation.

Ta-daaaah. The royal penis has been cleaned.

All goofing aside, the changing of the guard (name) is not just formality, it is Harrah's deciding to put a stake in the ground of international expansion. Foreign gaming growth - most notably in Macau - has been buoying the bottom lines of competitors Wynn Resorts, MGM Mirage and Las Vegas Sands Corp (Venetian etc), particularly during economic question marks in the U.S. economy.

Harrah's has been tinkling around the shrubbery with property expansions in Spain, Caribbean (cancelled), Slovenia (also cancelled), the purchase of a Cotai strip adjacent golf course in Macau and various UK deals, most of which haven't come to fruition. Exchanging Harrah's workaday overalls for a Roman loincloth will have a noticeable impact on the company as it ventures forth into new jurisdictions - most of whom are only partially familiar with the Harrah's brand of low rent riverboat gambling and marketing prowess.

In this case, walking into meetings with foreign dignitaries wearing Caesars Entertainment lapel pins will actually make a difference. So much for all the business cards they just printed.

Thanks to the RateVegas twit feed for the tip on this one.

Comments & Discussion:

Why do the people currently running Harrah's think that it is better to ruin the good name of Caesar's instead of doing what is necessary to upgrade the image of the Harrah's name? Are these the same folks who remodel hotels without permits and inspections? Are they the same ones who close free shows at the RIO and close buffets at Bally's? Are they the same ones who worsened the odds on video poker and slots at all the Vegas casinos? Are they the same people who push 6/5 Blackjack? What makes them think that they won't screw this up too?
