The End Of An Era : Golden Gate To Serve Final Shrimp Cocktail
Merely a month after posting our video review of the world famous .99 cent Shrimp Cocktail at Golden Gate, the venerable downtown landmark announced that they are forced to discontinue the Vegas tradition effective immediately.
From the press release:
After forty-five years and tens of millions of satisfied customers served, the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is sad to announce that the final .99 cent shrimp cocktail will be served in a civic ceremony this Tuesday April 1, 2008. Due to rising energy costs associated with shipping in those tender morsels of shrimpy goodness, we are unable to continue offering our signature dish for .99 cents. In respect to the long tradition of the Golden Gate shrimp cocktails, we refuse to raise the price to over 1.00.
The hotel did hold out hope that once this rough patch of the economy passes and fuel costs recede to bearable levels that the Shrimp cocktail could return.
Regardless... it is a sad day indeed.
April Fools!
