Wyndham Sugar Bay Casino Refuses to Pay 5M Slot Win

Gambler Alvin Paulson was vacationing with his family at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort in St. Thomas, Caribbean Islands when the $20 he slipped into a slot machine turned into $5.1m jackpot... or so he thought.

Next thing I know there's bells and whistles going off, the place is going crazy

The ensuing hubub caused a slot floor manager to come over to Paulson and promptly turn the machine off saying 'It's an obvious malfunction' and declaring that the bet was invalid.

Yeah right.

Little did they know that Mr. Paulson is an attorney, and upon returning to his home in Illinois immediately filed a lawsuit in the hopes of either getting his due winnings or a detailed account of what exactly this 'malfunction' was.

The stories of casinos not paying slot wins has become more and more frequent over the last year. The Venetian Macao refused to payout a jackpot to a registered Cotai Rewards Club member, alleging the winner was related to a casino employee just last week. Maybe its time for local gaming jurisdictions to standardize slot machine diagnostics and provide certified documentation to all "rejected winners" about these supposed malfunctions, otherwise it's a 'my word against yours' situation between the player and slot matrons.

As if you needed more evidence that slot machines blow chunks.

Comments & Discussion:

can you imagine if a guy put down a really big bet in craps or blackjack or some other table game (with pit boss approval), wins, and is refused payment? why is it that the casinos have no problem paying out when whales bet like this vs. a poor schlub on a slot machine? you would think that they would be smart and offer the slot winner the moon - you KNOW he/she would be back to blow some of that cash
