Hendrix Drummer Buddy Miles Passes
Legendary drummer Buddy Miles, known to most as the drummer / second voice during Jimi Hendrix' Band of Gypsies era, and provider of fat back funk beats on a number of later era Hendrix gems passed away last night at his home in Austin Texas surrounded by family. No cause of death was announced.
For my money, "Machine Gun" - recorded live at the Fillmore East on New Years Eve 1969/70 - is a masterpiece of sonic beauty. At once shocking, elegant, mournful, political and full of hope, the Band of Gypsies performance of Machine Gun stands as one of the true symphonies of rock music, on par with any Beethoven, Coltrane, Miles or otherwise jam before or since.
While Buddy's tenure in the world of Jimi Hendrix was quite brief, and ended somewhat acrimoniously, his contributions to the canon of the greatest guitarist to ever walk this or any other planet / realm of existence deserve extreme praise.
We wish you well Buddy, thank you for all the joy you have given us.
