Periodically I take a look at the server logs to see if any weird things are happening to the site, missing pages, errors and whatnot. Today I found an interesting little entry that raised my eyebrows, and I thought I might share.

One of the "referring sites" (a list of sites that are linking in to ours) has this bizarre url:

/violet/reviews.php?db=ggbe_venetian& host=gg-s02.dev.biz360.com& site=Vegas%20Tripping

By dissecting the url a little, we can learn a lot of stuff about who it is, what they're doing and where they're coming from.

Note no "www", or tld on the domain (.com). This is obviously from a local server hosted on someones computer that is behind a firewall, this user's name is "violet", the db is "venetian", host is biz360.com and the site to search is VegasTripping (us)

Looking at all this, it's apparent that the folks at the Venetian have hired market intelligence firm Biz360 to copy the content - particularly reviews - from our site that mention the Venetian and report it back.

So, what does this mean to you? It means that the folks at the Venetian have hired auto bots to read VegasTripping in the hopes of getting an idea of what you think about the joint in the form of reviews posted to the site.

Lots of times, hotels read their reviews at TripAdvisor and contact people who have posted bad reviews or had specific complaints to get more information, rectify issues, or send out some comps. If you are contacted by The Venetian or any other person inquiring about your review via the "shout out" thingy in MyVegas we would love to hear about it.
