Tribal Casinos Laying Off Workers

As a result of housing foreclosures, $3+/gallon gasoline and gloomy economic outlook, gamblers in California are spending less of their time and money visiting the numerous Tribal casinos in Southern California, and casinos are laying off workers.

A handful of layoffs at Viejas casino isn't really the issue here, it is, however, an indicator of Californians gambling habits, which can easily be seen as a litmus test for the pinch Las Vegas casinos may feel in the coming months.

We all react differently when the economic woes put the crunch on the bank account.

When you're feeling the pinch do you:
a) Cut back on gambling trips altogether
b) Cancel Vegas trips and head to your local riverboat/tribal joint instead
c) Cancel local casino trips and hold off till the big Vegas
d) Who cares, you can't take it with you anyways.

Personally, the first thing to go from my list is the tribal casinos. While being slightly fun, I find them to be a less-than-satisfying experience, overall. I'd rather go without than have to skip the periodic Vegas blowout.

Comments & Discussion:

Right after 9/11, we found plenty a comps, a bunch of FP VP and lots of loose slots in Tunica. They were giving away rooms even on the weekend. The Mrs and I were over there every 2 or 3 months. The economy was slumping and we were glad to help our neighbors in Mississippi. But slowly, as the economy recovered, they began to diss us. No comps for you, you don't play enough. We're all booked; you can't use your free room coupon that we mailed you (even though you are trying to book a month in advance). We don't have any FP VP. Good luck trying to hit a jackpot on our machines. How arrogant!
Then, we discovered Vegas. I'd rather save up and lose it all in Vegas once or twice a year. At least I get the real thing and not some inferior imitation. I've gotta have my Vegas fix. I just can't help it.
