Van Halen Destroys Los Angeles

We've been tracking the saga of Eddie Van Halen for about a 18 months now... starting with an oddball appearance at a music biz awards show where Ed showed up looking like a toothless meth addict. Seeing a once gleaming hero to millions and genius to most rock n roll fans sliding into oblivion was at once sad, heartbreaking and compelling.

Over the next year we've watched Ed show up at porn awards shows, announce then abort a reunion tour with Diamond David Lee Roth, go to rehab then emerge with a new hairdo and teeth, and finally get the Dave/VH show back on track.

I was lucky enough to be the recipient of two killer Van Halen tickets for my birthday courtesy of my lovely wife Miss Monkay. She went so far as to invite my bestest bud (a fellow guitar slinger and VT contributing columnist) Richie Raviolis to come down from San Francisco for the show and a Thanksgiving blowout. Richie and I were both excited to go to the show but it was surely peppered with a somewhat detached optimism since the potential for disaster was high.

To put it simply... Van Halen blew the fucking doors off of the place. Ed's son, Wolfgang, presumably conceived to take Michael Anthony's job 16 years ago was... amazing. Alex... awesome. Edward... absolutely astounding and Dave... well... to risk losing credibility by applying even more hyperbolic mustard... he was the life of the party, spinning karate kicks, high pitched screetches, yelps and cocky shenanigans all on fine display.

I was planning on writing up a full on review of the show once the Thanksgiving sluggishness wore off... but as luck would have it, Miss Monkay won some contest for a freebie night at the Hard Rock including tickets to the Ozzy Osbourne/Rob Zombie show this evening at The Joint. We're gonna blast out to Vegas in a coupla hours to catch the show and see what's going on at the Hard Rock. The VH review will have to wait until we return.

Comments & Discussion:

Being there with my best buddy, who shares all my hard rock enthusiasm since grade school, was the treat of the year. But nostalgia aside, Eddie and the boys rocked the joint. I was more than impressed with Eddies playing, and was quite touched by his public display of affection for his son, Wolfgang, throughout the show. He would walk over during one of his ripping solos and give Wolfgang a kiss to the forehead... Ahhhww...

Diamond Dave was the host of the party and seemed to really be having a ball. Great show!! Thanks, Mica!!
