Gambling Addiction on Rise With The Ladies

Nevada Appeal has an interesting article about the rise of gaming addiction among women in the last few years.

The latest marketing techniques in gaming all reflect the needs and wants of one demographic - women.

"Gambling used to be the men enter smoke-filled rooms and sit around a card table and lose their money. The women were there to watch and look pretty," said Denise F. Quirk, clinical director and CEO of the Reno Problem Gambling Center. "Now, look who they're catering to."

With the addition of large luxurious spas, pools and dance clubs, you can be sure who controls a large chunk of the purse strings in Vegas. Everybody knows that men only go to these places to chase the ladies around. If all the hot chicks were in the Keno parlor, you know there would be a stream of sausage neatly bedecked in their buttondown/jeans outfits waiting to get in for the next calling of the numbers.

Our friend Dr. David Schwartz honcho of the gaming studies department at UNLV offers a couple insightful quotes as well (none of which are about Canadian prog rock trio Rush).

"I think women have always been important to gambling in Nevada," said David G. Schwartz, a gambling historian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "Women were dealers back to the 1930s, and it evolved from there. Let me put it this way, you would not have had Las Vegas become a successful tourism destination if there was not an appeal to women."
