Harrah's and AEG Live announced today that they will be building a massive 20,000 seat arena in the parking lots/storage areas behind Bally's and Paris.

The companies currently collaborate on The Coliseum at Caesars Palace, Harrah's build/owns the venue and AEG is responsible for bookings. The Harrah's /AEG project is hoping to lure an NBA and NHL team to Las Vegas in addition to hosting concerts.

Construction on the Arena is expected to begin in 2008 with completion in 2010.

Comments & Discussion:

Knew it was a matter of time before someone took the ball and ran with it. Considering that the downtown plans for an arena/stadium got scratched, the next logical spot was near the Strip. With Harrah's having acquired so many parcels in the area, it's no surprise that they've decided to build an arena on some of it. I wouldn't be surprised if convention space on the land they own behind the Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Harrahs.

As for a sports team to put in that arena, I'd put my money down on an NHL team before an NBA team. Rumors are circulating that the NHL is looking to add 2 teams by around 2010. AEG owns the L.A. Kings. Don Bruckheimer is a BIG hockey fan and has essentially already said that he'd like to own an NHL team if the league were to put one in Las Vegas. Another AEG-operated arena, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, is also looking for an NHL team as well (They almost landed the Penguins, but the City of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania was able to make a deal with the team to keep them in town, as the Pens had a deal tied in with the Isle of Capri that had the IOC gotten the Pittsburgh slots license, they would have funded a new arena for the team.).
