OSCEOLA (AP) -- Three out-of-state gamblers have been charged with trying to cheat a slot machine at Osceola's Lakeside Casino and Resort.

Steve Bogle, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said the three were using "shaved" coins in an effort to manipulate Lakeside's slot machines.

(One of the defendents) remained in jail and has told friends that he is on a hunger strike because all he did was keep playing a slot machine that kept paying off.

Cheaters try to "shave" a coin or token by cutting or grinding the outside edge to reduce the diameter in an effort to defraud a slot machine, said Jack Ketterer, administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The shaved coin or token is deposited into a slot machine for play and is recognized by the machine's optic mechanism as a valid credit.
