Not To Be Outdone, CBS Announces Viva Laughlin! TV Show

The geniuses at CBS have been sitting around scratching their heads, figuring out what to do since they pulled the plug on the semi-decent Rob Lowe vehicle Dr. Vegas after only 5 episodes in 2004. They figured that nobody wanted to see Rob Lowe as a doctor with a gambling problem. Maybe they were right, I thought the show was a bit more interesting than NBC's 'Las Vegas' but I'm not the executor of public taste.

I can see the TV execs sitting around in a meeting room... powerpoint projection on the wall showing pin pricks of casino properties all over the United States. Sitting around... riffing on some hip ideas... (cue harp music and fade in to board room).

Phil
"Vegas-based shows are over-saturated right now. Furthermore, with the constantly changing Vegas skyline, the stock helicopter shots we've been using since the Venetian opened aren't even remotely accurate anymore... we may as well use old intros from Kojak for Christs sake...

Ari
(interrupting)
I just talked to Irving in accounting - he said the cost of getting new aerial footage of Las Vegas is not only exorbitant, but futile since half the town is under construction! What are we gonna do?"

Joe
How about we do a gambling/casino related show somewhere else... Macau is pretty hot... why not there?

Ari
C'mon Joe... Macau? Thats on the other side of the planet... nobody speaks English there and the demographic we're trying to reach won't identify with an all Asian cast.

Phil
Could be edgy... the first Asian sitcom ever. We could get Pat Morita to be the casino owner.

Ari
Pat Morita's dead Phil.

Phil
Wow, I didn't know that. Maybe it isn't a good idea since he's dead. How about we do an Atlantic City version of Las Vegas?

Joe
(giggling)
About an Italian American family with deep mob connections whose patriarch visits a shrink to help him cope with is murderous ways?

Phil
That's great. Let's do it!

Ari
(under his breath)
Fucking idiot.
(bursting)
It's the Sopranos. Haven't you ever seen the Sopranos Phil?

Phil
I'm not a big fan of opera Ari... don't change the subject. Macau out. Jersey out. Reno?

Together
Out.

Phil
Tunica?

Joe
What the fuck is a tunica?

Phil
Biloxi?

Ari
Matthew Broderick is available... we could also get Sarah Jessica Parker in for a guest spot. Could be funny ...and sexy?

Joe
She's not sexy. She's the big nosed chick from Square Pegs with fake tits. Arf.

Phil
They're fake?

(Ari and Joe together crane their heads at Phil in disbelief)

Hrm. I didn't notice that. So... Biloxi's out. Council Bluffs? (pause) Bossier City? (longer pause) Sparks?

Ari
You're really reachin Phil. How about Lake Tahoe... it's reasonably close by and we can shoot indoor and outdoor scenes in non-union Canadian locations.

Joe
(begins laughing)

Ari
What are you laughing about Joe?

Joe
Nothing.(continues laughing)

Ari
Stop laughing. You're LAUGHING AT ME!

Phil
Perfect.

So Laughlin it is.

Joe. Ari.
Get Joe Pantoliano on the line and see if he's interested in our new project - "Viva, Laughlin!"

Seriously... there's a show called Viva Laughlin coming to CBS this fall... right after 60 Minutes. (See bottom left of the grid)
