Ooops: Tahoe Sportsbook Manager Busted For Stealing $21k
From Lake Tahoe: Former sportsbook manager at Lake Tahoe's Lakeside Inn was sentenced yesterday for cashing unpaid wagers to the tune of $21,565. As part of his penance, Ronald Tipton will pay restitution, abstain from drink and drugs, be subject to random search and seizure (!) as well as stay away from any and every form of gambling.
The judge in the case, David Gamble (seriously!), told Mr. Tipton that if he "so much as pitches pennies" he will win a one year all expense paid trip to Douglas County Jail, Gamblin' Hall, Saloon and Spa.
To Mr. Tipton's credit, he was proactive in repaying his former employer prior to sentencing ($20k's worth), has been attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings, and moved to Arizona where he has procured a good job that is not in the casino industry. He also expressed genuine remorse for letting his penchant for the ponies get the better of him.
It seems to be a regular occurrence these days that someone on the inside of a casino gets caught with their hand in the cookie jar. I'm curious how often this really happens and how the pressure of handling large amounts of cash & chips compounded by constant eye in the sky surveillance affects one's mental health. Living under all this pressure might make someone develop a nasty gambling habit.
