Q&A with D.W. Barrick (Owner of The Plaza and more...)
At the end of 2002 a company called Barrick Gaming Corp. burst on the scene with a surprise deal to buy four downtown casinos -- the Plaza, Las Vegas Club, Western and Gold Spike -- from Las Vegas casino pioneer Jackie Gaughan for $82 million.
Little was known about the company or why Chief Executive D.W. Barrick would be interested in spending millions of dollars to revamp the properties to their former glory. Barrick has a plan to become a key developer in a major revitalization of downtown that will include high-rise residential towers and other new projects over the next several years. He was involved in South Dakota's fledgling gaming industry and was a joint venture partner in a Missouri casino when it was owned by Station Casinos Inc. Since taking ownership of the Gaughan properties in March, Barrick has devised a makeover plan built on simple rules: better service, better food and better entertainment.
