The majestic Cal Neva resort in North Lake Tahoe has announced plans for a major makeover - and its about damn time. $50 million bucks have been earmarked for the aging resort that when owned by Frank Sinatra was home to all manner of clandestine mob summits. The plan is to upgrade accomodations as well as bring the technology into the 21st century. Its about time.

Plans call for replacement of elevators and lighting systems; upgrades of water, sewer and fire protection systems; replacement of 30 cottages with 42 new units; and construction of 12 new affordable housing units.

Owners want to use darker, earth-tone colors and natural materials in the hotel tower and other buildings in an effort to blend them into the environment, Haas said.

The present resort straddling the California-Nevada line was built in 1937, when a fire destroyed the original lodge that opened in 1926.
