Goodman Makes Grab for Cali Businesses

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman launched this week an advertising campaign to convince companies frustrated with California to move to business-friendly southern Nevada.

"Las Vegas is booming, while California is having its troubles," Goodman said. He cited the coastal state's expensive workmen's compensation insurance, tax structure, high cost of living and potentially unreliable power grid as negative factors for businesses.

Nevada has no corporate or personal income taxes, compared with top rates of 8.84 percent and 9.3 percent, respectively, in neighboring California.

Goodman said Las Vegas recognized the need to diversify from its gaming-based economy after the attacks of September 11, 2001, which led to a major slump in gambling revenue.

The city has since recovered and is on an economic roll, with personal income up 34 percent between 2001 and 2005 and gaming revenue up 28 percent over the same period.
