Binion Re-Trial Begins Again
LAS VEGAS - Even in this city of sin, the tawdry trial of a former stripper and her secret lover accused of murdering former casino executive Ted Binion was a decadent distraction until guilty verdicts brought the case to a sensational close in May 2000.
But on Monday, another chapter in this Vegas-style tale of buried treasure, missing panties, a striking blonde and her Montana man will unfold, set in motion by a Nevada Supreme Court decision that overturned the convictions of Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish.
Las Vegas is bracing for the spotlight the second trial will shine on the titillating case of sex, lies and murder as 12 jurors attempt to answer the question of how Binion, a rich, mob-connected heroin addict, died.
"When you look at the picture of the gold-digger Sandy Murphy and the guy-on-the-make Rick Tabish . . . it's a pretty unseemly group," said John L. Smith, author and Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist who covered the first trial. "It's almost like a Vegas cartoon."
