The popularity of poker across the country is driving big crowds to Atlantic City.

Inspired by innovative and intense TV coverage of the game and the proliferation of gambling Websites, amateurs and experts alike have pushed the combined poker revenues for Atlantic City’s casinos from $37.1 million in 2003 to $67 million during 2005.

In 2005 poker provided 1.3% of Atlantic City’s $5 billion in casino revenue, up from 0.8% of the $4.8 billion the town’s gambling halls pulled in during 2003. The poker numbers are small because the players battle each other, not the casino, which takes a small percentage of each pot, up to 4%. Slot machines are still the big winners for Atlantic City, making up 74%, or $3.7 billion, of total casino revenues in 2005.

Not everyone’s jumping on the bandwagon. Two holdouts—the Trump Marina and the Trump Plaza—have yet to add a single poker table to their menus of gaming choices.

“It’s a business issue,” says Daniel Heneghan, public information officer for the Atlantic City Casino Control Commission. “Poker’s not a big money maker.”
