Reno Atlantis Hints at Expansion

With the expansion of the Peppermill Hotel-Casino and plans by Las Vegas-based Station Casinos to move into the Reno market, Atlantis Casino Resort officials are laying the groundwork for a possible expansion of their Virginia Street property. John and Ben Farahi, executives with the Atlantis' parent company, have asked Reno officials to rezone nearly 19 acres stretching north from the Atlantis to Moana Lane for a hotel-casino. The brothers own the land in a limited partnership, Biggest Little Investments.

While no application has been filed to build, the zoning application states the Farahis intend to redevelop the Sierra Marketplace shopping center. Smith's Food & Drug had been the anchor tenant of that shopping center, but the store closed and several other storefronts are also vacant.

"Establishment of (hotel-casino) zoning at the site is the first step to the overall redevelopment of Sierra Marketplace," the application states. "HC zoning will allow for a wide array of uses with the ability to include tourist-oriented facilities including gaming, hotels, etc."
