Collecting Vegas

Randy Temple goes to Las Vegas twice a year on his way to visit family in Los Angeles. He walks the Strip. Hits the video poker machines. Revels in the ambience of the ultimate tinseltown. And collects enough Las Vegas paraphernalia -- from dice to neon lamps -- to fill a large carry-on bag.

"Friends think I should be charging admission," laughs Temple, 41, whose Las Vegas collection nearly fills his two-bedroom mobile home in Sturgeon Lake. "They say it's like a museum."

The assistant manager of Market Place Foods in Moose Lake has thousands of items, most bearing the names of hotel-casinos, a requirement for his collection.

Over the past 18 years, he has accumulated hundreds of glasses -- from shot glasses to tall hurricanes -- that fill several display cases. Walls are covered with Las Vegas posters, pictures and signs. Books about Las Vegas, and travel and reference guides for the city fill a bookcase. Tables display hotel ashtrays, matchbooks and bottles. Casino coin cups line the top of his kitchen cupboards. Mugs and mouse pads cover the countertop.

"Everywhere I can set something, I have it full," says Temple, who's single.
