The Reno City Council has approved zoning changes in south Reno that will allow Station Casinos to build Washoe County's first new hotel-casino in a decade.

The company plans a $500 million project at the east side of U.S. 395, just south of Geiger Grade and 8 miles south of downtown Reno. Mayor Bob Cashell and other supporters said a major destination resort would bring more people to the area and would raise the bar for other hotel-casinos to upgrade their properties. Councilman Dan Gustin was the lone opponent in a 6-1 vote. He cited concerns about traffic and a possible negative impact on downtown casinos.

The last new major casino built in the county was Silver Legacy, which opened in 1995. The project also would be the first project in Washoe County for the Las Vegas-based company, a major player in the national gaming market.
