History of Tropicana
One of the vintage Vegas joints, the Tropicana is synonymous with Vegas itself. Recent years the Trop has been rumored to be on the demolition block, but we'll see what happens. But new owners have made plans to build a bunch of brand new hotel towers in the land surrounding the current Tropicana hotel and casino. The Tropicana has great old school Vegas Vibes... its rustic yet not skunky like the Riviera or some of the other older joints.
How are the rooms at Tropicana?
If your staying at the Trop, we suggest the Island or Paradise towers. The other options are the Garden Rooms, which are the on the old school Motor Lodge tip. Do NOT pay over $100/night for Garden Rooms unless you have no other options. They're very very basic accomodations. Fortunately these low-lying motel buildings will be demolished to make way for the brand new stuff the Tropicana's new owners have planned. We're very excited to see how the new Tropicana turns out.
What restaurants are at Tropicana?
Legends Steak and Seafood - steaks, chops, chicken, seafood in a casual dining atmosphere. Entrees range in price from $15-40.
Mizuno's - Japanese cuisine done up in a Teppanyaki style a la Benihana. Lots of good stuff here.
Tuscany Italian Cafe - Italian Cuisine from the Old Country. Create your own pasta dish, along with seafood, chicken or veal. Their espresso is particularly good
Garden Cafe - standard Cafe dining but with a tropical twist. Open 24-7.Beware of the waffles if you're on mushrooms... just ask Vinny.
Island Buffet - the usual buffet deal. Prices range from $11-16.
Player's Deli - big sandwiches, medium price. The pastrami was lean, tasty and not to greasy. Great choice for a quick bite
The Trop also has a non-Starbucks coffee joint.
Where is Tropicana Located?
Tropicana Blvd and the Strip... on the corner that the MGM Grand, New York-New York and Excalibur don't occupy. Hooters Hotel & Casino is right next door - a very refreshing and goofy good time... particularly if you like hot wings and chix in orange hot pants.
Exclusive Tips for Tropicana:
Service with a smile always at the Trop. The housekeeping, room service and check-in staff is courteous, thoughtful and cheery. It's a stark contrast to the grouchy, self-involved and somewhat bitchy crew you'll find over at Mandalay Bay. These folks have probably been working here for 20 years and they know how to do customer service in a sweet and gentile "Aunt Ethel" kinda way.

This is the best casino ever! It's so horribly tacky and had ME written all over it. The Celebration Lounge was just horrible (and I mean that with the most respect ever) the drinks were good and strong and cheap and the bartender was wearing cop glasses and look liked he just walked out of an episode of CHiPS.......if you're looking for superb upscale (which I do NOT) then this is not the place for you. It's so cheap and ridiculous.

Good value (25$) for a room on the strip. Be sure you get a room in the paradise tower, as the isalnd tower is old, and the garden rooms have been here since this joint opened in the 50s. (Pssst...20$ trick works here!) Nice 24 hour restaurant, decent buffet and coffee shop, and a pretty damn nice casino too. Overall well worth the measely price paid.

Yuck, yuck, yuck. The mainstay of my best friend's parents (who got me a great rate there once-- thanks!), this property was tired and downright dirty. I got free tickets to the burlesque show at the time, and it was... interesting. Lofty pretensions with seemingly little real directorial sense to back it up. (I get the impression it may have fallen from greatness.) The only bonus might be the mirror above the bed in a faux-bamboo frame, if only my wife had been with me for that trip.

I still find the lowrise hotel buildings very charming with their balconies and dating back to the 50's and 60's. The Island tower might be worth $10 a nigh extra if you want to take a bath for two as those rooms have big tubs, and mirrors over the beds! But the strip tower (is it the Tiffany?) has really ugly furnishings and no big tub, no mirrors, no balconies. I think the only thing the LV Trop has going for it is anything that remains that is tacky. I hope they keep up the maintenance on the pool area, which of course is this place's one strong point.

The rooms at the Trop are clean and a pretty good deal over all, but hot damn this place is a bore.
