Featurette: First Photos from South Coast

Another Coast casino opens on South Las Vegas Boulevard

Posted by Chuckmonster

We popped into the new Boyd Gaming joint South Coast over the weekend for an hour or so to check the joint out and bring back an early report.

South Coast is approximately 4 miles south of Mandalay Bay on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard, just north of Blue Diamond Road. It's vibe is distinctly "Southern California" right down to the 50's classic automobile styling of their logo. Their marquee isn't mystifying but it is pretty tall.

The building? Take Bellagio and paint it onto a large rectangular object and replace the Lake with a parking lot. You can tell locals casinos because they have outdoor parking lots kinda like a mall. Inside the building is a faint yellow color with ceramic tiling on the columns and tall ceilings. The casino, hotel registration, buffet, restaurants and sports book are essentially different portions of one giant room. The vibe is quite bright and airy.

The casino? Tons of slots and video poker in rows surrounding a phalaynx of gaming tables in the middle of the giant room. Craps (6 tables), blackjack, sports book, poker room, three card poker, four card poker, caribbean stud, let it ride and most of the other casino games you'd expect. The slots were hit and miss... but we did manage to pull out a coupla pretty nice jackpots on quarter Triple Double Wild Cherry machines within 5 minutes of each other. Grand take on these two hits: $475.
