Here Comes The Sun : Cirque du Soleil Meets The Beatles

Conjecture and Prestidigitation About The Beatles/Cirque Show Coming to Mirage in 2006

Posted by Chuckmonster

Many other titles do contain lyrical references to "sun" "sunday" "day" and corollary partners "night" and "rain". From these songs we begin to get a clearer picture about the possible song list.

Major References:
Yellow Submarine
So we sailed up to the sun
Till we found the sea of green

Fool On The Hill
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down

Good Night
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night Sleep tight

I Am The Walrus
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun
If the sun don't come, you get a tan
From standing in the English rain

Two Of Us
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low
In the sun

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone

Across The Universe
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns it calls me on and on

Anytime At All
If the sun has faded away, I'll try to make it shine
there's nothing I won't do

Minor References:
Day Tripper
No "sun" but "day".

A Day In The Life
No direct refereces to "Sun" but "Day In The Life" contains allusions to majesty ("Not Really sure if he was from the House of Lords") crowds "watching" (A crowd of people stood and stared) and the number of "holes it takes to fill Albert Hall". "Holes" being bung holes, and Albert Hall being the large performance space in London - how many seats it takes to fill the seats.

Good Morning, Good Morning

It's All Too Much

Dear Prudence

For No One

Sexy Sadie

Related References:
Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite (circus)
Their production will be second to none
And of course Henry the Horse dances the waltz

Strawberry Fields Forever
General outdoors vibe, plus the song is in the Cirque/Beatles announcement video.

So lets get down to the nuts and bolts of it. The Cirque du Soleil/Beatles show at Mirage is scheduled to run 90 minutes. That's 30 concurrent 3 minute songs. Let's be safe and chop it down to 16 songs to account for set changes, and differing song lengths as well as the possibility that there may be extended musique concrete remixes and lengthening to facilitate some of the acrobatics. From the songs presented above, we can easily cross some off from the list (Sexy Sadie, For No One, It's All Too Much, while great songs, are a bit more obscure in the realms of Beatledom). From the remainder we can distill the list down to 16 songs taking into account the following factors:

Tempo - is the song slow or fast
Vibe - is the song exuberant or introspective
Story - is the song a "sun" or "night" song
Pacing - is the song before similar to the song after
Worth - is the song a bigger hit than others
Era - are all eras of the Beatles represented
Singer - are all members of the Beatles represented

Possible Song List:
Here Comes The Sun - George
Sun King - John
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - John
Across The Universe - John
Strawberry Fields Forever - John
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite - John
Fool On The Hill - Paul
Good Night - Ringo

Two Of Us - John / Paul
A Day In The Life - John / Paul
Anytime At All - Paul
Day Tripper - Paul
Dear Prudence - Paul
I'll Follow The Sun - Paul
Good Day Sunshine - Paul
(we'll throw Let It Be and/or Hey Jude on the list just cause)
