Here Comes The Sun : Cirque du Soleil Meets The Beatles

Conjecture and Prestidigitation About The Beatles/Cirque Show Coming to Mirage in 2006

Posted by Chuckmonster

The In-The-Round presentation will be a metaphor for of the sun, with energy pushing outward from the center over the crowd. I'll guess that some portions of the show will take place directly over the audience - either performance or projection - a direct reflection of heliocentric energy. A look at the designs for the inside of the new Theater at Mirage confirm this... with two diamond shaped performance areas with spoked wooden runways that go from the stage directly out through the audience.

One thing must be made clear, this will not be a "We Will Rock You" or "Mamma Mia!" jobby where a direct narrative will be wrapped around a string of classic hits. The Cirque du Soleil folks are quite a bit smarter than that - there will, however be a "theme" that runs through the show - and possibly a very loose non-verbal dialogue (other than the lyrics to the songs themselves.)

Conjecture Time

At the center of the "story" will be a large ornately dressed 35 foot tall enstilted character "The Sun King". The dramatic curve taken from the songs will outline a "meta-story" about the Sun King's rise to power - cradle to the grave - morning noon and night. The Sun King plot will contain very subtle anti-war overtones to the story but they will be masqued by artsy fartsy Pomp and Cirque-m-stance. The secondary plots will be a simple metaphor for life and death, with the lifespan of a universe's trajectory of existance being the modus operandi. This raises the question - will there be a big bang or "intelligent design"? And, more importantly, how will it end? George's dream, in death, will live.

Sun King (from Abbey Road)
Here comes the sun king
Here comes the sun king
Everybody's laughing
Everybody's happy
Here comes the sun king

Quando paramucho mi amore de felice carathon
Mundo paparazzi mi amore chicka ferdy parasol
Questo abrigado tantamucho que canite carousel

The last verse is an amalgam of various bits of Lennonesque jibberish wordplay in Spanish, Italian and Liverpudlian. A subtle joke on Paul's French verse in the song "Michelle". Here it is, "translated":

When For Much My Love Of Happy Heart
World Paparazzi my Love, girl green parasol (or: for the sun)
This thanks very much cake and eat it carousel (or: dearest sun)

Staging will include carousels, parasols (up or down Mr. Wynn?), and of course the sun. Expect to see umbrellas, and somewhat traditional circus/carnival imagery.

(next: Here Comes The Sun and more possible songs...)
