Encore Las Vegas

VT: Moving from City Center to all of the projects, lets talk about Encore. What are your thoughts about the project?

MA: Besides the fact that Steve doesn't allow any renderings out so I had to create my own based on Sketch Up. I was invited to the ground breaking and I got a word in with Steve Wynn. It was brief but I asked him which way the towers was going to point, because we thought it was going to be shaped like an S, with the two towers. He said "No No No!" he got real...

VT: Animated?

MA: Very animated. So I said "Have you seen my renderings of Encore, Steve?" His eyebrow could not have gone up any higher and he said "Rennndering???" "Yeah, go check out VegasTodayandTomrrow." He whispered something to the guy next to him like 'remember this Vegas Today and Tomorrow,' I don't know what he said exactly.

VT: You never heard back?

MA: Never heard back, but that's a piece of art. I created it, so they can't tell me to take it down. In fact, I started to do a complete City Center rendering just so I could have one, but they finally allowed me to carry the renderings.

What do I think of Encore? After I got over my shock when I walked into Wynn Las Vegas on April 27, 2005 - I was expecting the inside to be as modern and cool as the outside. He said it was going to be 'a building for the desert', so I was thinking 'Red Rock'. Modern, Frank Lloyd Wright-esque, clean lines, sand and textures... I wasn't expecting red carpet with posies on it, and baby poop green paint with flowers and brown walls... I wasn't expecting all the ornate detail. It looks like Bellagio on drugs. I was really expecting something sleek and modern and cool, so I was very disappointed. Then I looked closer at the details, everything is real in there. Where the Venetian's ceiling decor is that styrofoam product... the whole ceiling of the Venetian's casino is styrofoam painted to look like plaster. Steve Wynn's is imported Italian plaster. Everything in there is real - the tufted satin walls, inlaid mosaics, mother of pearl... there is where the $2.7 billion went, into the details. So my hat is off to the fact that it's authentic, it's not a plastic replica of anything and isn't trying to be anything other than what it is. I'm not really fond of the decor, the style.

Steve released another tidbit, that the interior of Encore's casino will be patterned after Wynn Macau. So I found some photos of Wynn Macau and it's lots of pillars and draperies and red carpet... kind of ordinary 'been-there-done-that' design. Again, i'm disappointed. I think it's going to be a nice resort, high end, and I'll certainly enjoy wandering through it, looking at all the restaurants. Encore is not my cup of tea, design-wise, i'm a modernist. That's why I'm itching to see City Center, I want to see renderings of the casino in City Center.

thank you for the interview - i actually found this site thru vegasTAT when they won the trippie award last year, and i go to both sites daily. it was very interesting to see that MGMMirage was against the renderings, but it didn's surprise me. Mr Adams is doing a wonderful job over there.
