Couple of Random Questions

Here's just a couple questions I thought you guys could help me with.
On the next trip to Vegas we're going to take a couple days and drive up to Lake Tahoe and Reno, kind of a Nevada road trip instead of staying in Vegas the whole week.

First question
Has anyone been to Reno lately?
The sole reason we're going there is to stay at a fantastic 70's suite at the Peppermill and the BF has never been to Lake Tahoe or Reno (I've been to both).
With all the casinos there closing left and right, would you still go there for just an overnight to check the place out?

Also, what is a "run of house" rate on a hotel?
I've seen this before but never knew what it was. The hotel we're staying at in Lake Tahoe has a "run of house" rate that's fairly cheap...but I want to know what it is before I book it.

In addition to being born in Reno and living around that area for a number of years, I also make at least one trip to reno/tahoe a year for various reasons so I can try to answer these questions.

Reno is an okay place to check out, but its experience is nothing like vegas, think Bakersfield with Casinos. Yea, some casinos are closing, especially the ones downtown, but there are a bunch spread out all around town. Including some nice ones like the Grand Sierra and nugget. Nugget has great food btw (pan roast oyster bar!) If you are a Casino junkie totally go. But if you are looking for a vegas like experience don't. I did stay at the peppermill last time i stayed at a casino in Reno, it was interesting, definantly a throw back.

That being said, tahoe is another story! I actually lived there for a few years. Most of the bigger casinos are on the south shore. The north being limited to a few small club-like casinos ~ crystal bay club being pretty rad and the Hyatt (i think) in Incline Village. Tahoe is beautiful, I would say take the trip to see tahoe alone. Most people won't understand how pretty it is until they actually see it first hand. The house rates are typically cheaper than vegas, especially since you are going off season -- not summer or winter.

Finally, you do realize that the trip, by car, from vegas to reno is over 400 miles. (thats basically how far i am from my home to vegas). Driving that would kinda knock out a whole day both ways :-(. Plus the drive is mostly barren desert. If you go I hope ya have great time, pack some warm clothes because tahoe can get cold at night. And enjoy the drive!

i think "run of house" means they let you run through the halls naked once a day.

Yeah actually now that I've sat here and looked around. I think we're just going to fly to Reno, drive straight to Tahoe, stay at Harveys (I've stayed there before) for a 2 or 3 nights, hang out, and then drive back to Reno, stay two nights at the Peppermill and then head home. I've been to both places before. I love Lake Tahoe but Reno...well it's OK but it gets boring fast. I just want to stay in those horrible retro Imperial Suites (why is the word Imperial always involved with something trashy?) at the Peppermill. The ones with the trippy lights and black lacquer furniture w/a hot tub in the room. We'll probably go in late February or March while it's still somewhat chilly outside, it's nice to get out of the humid armpit heat that is Florida.

Cool.. have fun! On a plus side Reno is a ton cheaper then Vegas any day. And if you go in Feb, enjoy the snow in Tahoe!

Reno is great fun. Tahoe is gorgeous.

I usually have a great time in both places, but then again, I tend to have a good time all the time. :D

One thing about Tahoe tho - i get a little bored on the south shore after 36 hours there. It's gorgeous and all, but it's attractions are somewhat limited. I agree with the comment to head to the Crystal Bay club on the North Shore... they have live music nightly, and not lounge acts - usually live indie, reggae, funk, blues and jambands touring the country. Definitely visit the Cal Neva (Tahoe, not Reno). The info on RenoTripping was updated yet again just a few months ago. there's also tons of reno/tahoe pics on photos.vt so you'll know what you're getting into.

As for Reno itself, i love it there. shit is dirt cheep and not crowded at all. eldorado is great, and the sands regency (terribles) is eyepoppingly vintage.... it's literally 1973 in there. peppermill is a "must see" and the ja nugget in sparks is super fun.

can't wait to see the vid clip of the busted ac at the peppermill! :)

You know what sucks? I was looking at the Peppermill's site last night and it looks like they're re-doing all of their rooms to match that "Italian" theme that the Tuscany tower has. I really hope they don't have them all done before I make it out there! I need my 1982 Imperial suite with the black lacquer furniture and crush velvet bedspreads!!!
