I've been thinking of booking a trip in April
Both have the same discounted price and I don't know which one to pick.

If you want to be on the strip then you have to stay at NY NY since Golden Nugget is on Fremont. So if you stay there then you would have to cab it to get to where most of the people are. I have seen the rooms at NY NY and they arent bad.

I tend to lean towards downtown. But in this instance it will depend on your tastes. Nugget has the better pool and the better updated rooms. The Rush Tower is amazing. The Nugget will have the loser slots, lower limits and a poker room in their casino. Both have parking garages that are free (Nugget free if you stay). For clubs, NYNY has two clubs. Coyote Ugly is a useless pecker festival of over priced drinks. RoK has potential on some nights to be a decent little club. Nugget has a lounge called Gold Diggers that can skew a little older. Restaurants: NYNY probably kills this one. Between their fine dining and the NY cafes/restaurants/bars you have more of a selection at every price point. Nugget has a great food selection but is just medium to somewhat expensive. Being from Texas I am already over-exposed to all the Nugget eateries and I may be really biased in my dislike for their food.

Best part of the Nugget is the food that is really close by - Firefly (if it's still open) at the Plaza, the Tripple George, just down 4th ST, the 2nd ST grill and the 777 Brew pub at MSS.

I'd stay at the Nugget, really kewl vibe and a wayyyyy better pool.

Firefly is temporarily closed until the renovations at the Plaza are done, as some of the construction was affecting the access to Firefly.

Tinoco's Kitchen at Vegas Club is pretty good, as is DuPar's over at the Golden Gate.

I definitely agree about the food offerings at the GN. The two Asian places are mediocre at best (I can get better food of this type at the place I go to here.) and the buffet is decent.

The rooms at the GN are nice and the overall vibe is nice. Plus you have multiple casinos in which to gamble at that are a lot closer of a stumble back to ones room.....

Love the Nugget! I stay there once a year and really enjoy the property. This is really a classic strip vs. downtown question so it depends on what's improtant to you. I like DT for all of the gambling options within 1/4 a mile of each other. The food at the Nugget is fine, snack bar, cafe, fine dining - all good in my humble opinion. If I need a strip fix, I'm only a cab ride away.

I've stayed at both. I think the Nugget rooms are superior, (and this was before the Nugget renovation), and I like the casino vibe there.

But what others have said is correct. This is essentially a strip vs downtown question. Where do you want to spend your time: the strip, or downtown?

On my next trip (only 2 days away!) I decided to stay on the Strip but I'd take the GN over NY-NY anyday. The video poker paytables at NY - NY are among the worst anywhere and I've had some bad experiences with the food there.
